Haiku Poems are another means of expressing an experience in a special place. Here are my impressions of Hawaii in the Haiku Form:

Part I: two days at a conference at Waikiki.

oahu hawaii
a taste of sushi and
a mouth full of vowels

waikiki
only 6 feet of beach left
but a million footprints

waikiki waves
the tour buses roll in
and in and in riding

the elevator with
that japanese tourist
a thousand miles between us

twenty story hotels --
the greed rises
out of the ocean

Part II: Kona, Big Island, Hawaii

beneath the calm surface
the dusky damsel fish
attacks all trespassers

Ho'apalakama'a--
missing home
and my consonants

Kona, Hawaii
fewer people
same amount of greed

these many-colored fish
above the surface
we'd call them butterflies

ancient marriage--
the sea gently
caresses the shore

the reef fish graze
on algae and coral--
the shoppers on trinkets

new Hawaii--
two singers dancing
in sequined hot pants

even poi
has too many vowels
to digest
