Photography Field Trips

Join Ray Rasmussen on one of his Canyonlands or Willmore Wilderness photography excursions.

Here are some tips by Ray Rasmussen on how do take good landscape and wildflower photographs

Each year I organize photography field trips for hikers, riders and people who want to eiher learn photography or who are already competent photographers.

Canyonlands National Park: I'm typically in the Needles District of Canyonlands, Utah from mid-April through mid-May where I stay in the Needles Campground and do morning and evening photo sessions. The Canyonlands trip is low cost and is for people who are willing to be in a campground, sleep in a tent, cook their own meals, etc. Each day we walk/hike to photo locations. You have to supply your own camping gear, tent, sleeping bags, food, stove, etc. The campground supplies a picnic table.

Willmore Wilderness Park: I visit for a few weeks either in July or August. I have an outfitter put in a base camp and spend the time doing day hikes and photography. In some years, I travel with the outfitter, moving every second or third day to new locations. The Willmore Trip involves outfitter's fees the amount of which depends on whether I'm at a base camp, cooking our own meals, or on a trip where we move locations and receive full service.

Fees: My own fees for teaching are negotiable depending on whether you are a beginner, requiring lots of help or an intermediate or advanced photographer requiring only guidance in getting to interesting places to shoot.

I also take people along on short trips to the badlands of Southern Alberta and to Jasper and Banff Parks.

Caution: Photography is about light, waiting for the right lighting conditions for good exposures and in the meanwhile doing other things like walking/hiking/hanging out. On some days, I don't shoot any images because the light isn't good or because I'm in the wrong place for those magic moments of morning and evening light or because I don't want my entire life to be orchestrated through a camera lens.

If you're interested in joining me on a trip, drop me an email and let me know who you are and whether you are a photography beginner, intermediate, or expert. You might also consider sending me one of your favorite images and tell me a bit about the cameras, lenses and films that you use.
