Step 1

First we'll make a simple mandala by repeating the form in the original 4 times.

You can easily see what I mean by looking at this image and comparing it with the original, right?

If not, have a look at the original [modigliani original]

I call this 'making the four.'

The question is how to get from the original to the one on the right? Or, in our new language, how do you "make the four?"

Getting to the image on the right is something that you will do several times in this process, so it's a good one to master.

1. Open the original Modigliani image.

2. Select Menu -> select "ALL"

This means, go to the "Select Menu" and of the choices shown, select the choice called "ALL." Got it? We'll use this shortcut notation throughout these steps.

3. Edit Menu -> select "COPY"

Now you will have a copy of the image on your clipboard ... no, you can't see the clipboard ... trust your computer if you are able to do so and are somewhat foolish ... it's there! honest!

4. File Menu -> select "NEW"

Unless your computer is misbehaving, you will now see a dialogue box like the one shown below.

Note that it tells you that your original image is 292 pixels wide, 400 pixels high and 72 pixels/inch.

4A. Type in a title: "makingthefour.jpg"

4B. Increase the size of the image by setting the width to 2x292 = 584 pixels and height 2x400 = 800 pixels and

4C. click "OK". Why? You'll find out! And, in making the four, you'll repeat these ABCs many times.

Now you should have a blank white window named "makingthefour.jpg" which is 584 x 800 pixels.

5. Edit Menu -> select "PASTE"

Now you will have the original modigliani image smack in the middle of your 584 x 800 pixel white window.

6. Click on the MOVE TOOL and move the image to the upper left corner. If need be, play with the up-down, left-right arrows on your keyboard to ensure that your image is flush against the upper left corner.

7. Edit Menu -> select "PASTE"

Now you will have one modigliani image at the upper left and a new one in the middle of the window.

8. Click on the MOVE TOOL and move the image to the upper right corner. Play with the up-down, left-right keyboard arrows until the two images are flush to each other. Now do you see why you doubled the width and height of the original?

9. Edit Menu -> select "TRANSFORM" -> select "FLIP HORIZONTAL"

Now your image should look like this and probably you can see where this is taking us.

10. Edit Menu -> select "PASTE" [which should give you a third modigliani image in the middle with the other two in the upper left and right corners.

11. Click on the MOVE TOOL and move the image to the lower left corner.

12. Edit Menu -> select "TRANSFORM" -> select "FLIP VERTICAL"

13. Edit Menu -> select "PASTE" [which should give you a fouth modigliani image in the middle with the other thre in the corners.

14. Click on the MOVE TOOL and move the image to the lower right corner.

15. Edit Menu -> select "TRANSFORM" -> select "FLIP VERTICAL"

16. Edit Menu -> select "TRANSFORM" -> select "FLIP HORIZONTAL"

If all worked well, you should now have an image that looks like the one at the top. However, it's not a single image, it's composed of 4 layers. In the next step you will flatten the image into one layer.

Is your layers window showing to the right of your image? If not,

17. Window Menu -> select "LAYERS".

Now you should see a layers window to the right of your main window.

18. In the upper right hand corner of the layers window, you will see a small black triangle. Here's what it looks like. Click on it and select "Flatten Image".

Now, when you look in the layers window, you will see that there is but one layer.

Congratulations, you've "made the four" for the first, but not the last time.
