Petroglyphs, Utah
My grandfather was a doctor and
for a while lived on an Indian reservation in South Dakota with my grandmother
and mother. His love of Native Americans was passed down to my mother, who passed
it along to me. Hopefully I will do the same with my children and grandchildren.
This is a panel of Native American Petroglyphs (paintings). Its located
in a section of Canyonlands in Utah called Sego Canyon. This particular panel
is simply called West Panel and is significant because its supposed
to have 3 distinct types of painting (Barrier, Fremont & Ute) by 3 different
tribes of Native Americans along with graffiti left by pioneers.
It is believed Petroglyphs tell stories. These stories can represent migrations,
a way of life, an event, or spiritual powers. They sometimes show crops, or hunting
events, animals, a way of life, a birth. Some believed they were not done by humans,
but were created by super beings (Shamans) with spiritual powers and
that those powers were passed on to many who stopped there, or put fear into some
as well. Some drawings were located high on cliff walls, where it was reasoned
no human could reach. Many figures are life size or bigger and have features comprised
of both human, animal and bird. This panel shows the mysterious Shamans.
When I see them I enjoy just standing and looking trying to figure out what they
were trying to tell us. Should you go, you shouldnt touch them (even though
its tempting), as the oils in our hands can destroy them over time.
