Barberry [Mahonia fremontii]

This holly like shrub blooms in April. It's one of the sweetest smelling desert plants. Don't mind the buzzing of the bees and moths, get in close and take a sniff if you're lucky enough to be there when the yellow blooms are out. Sometimes in the dusk it's possible to smell a barberry bush from 100 feet away.
